The Benedictine monastery in Gengenbach—then belonging to the Archdiocese of Strasbourg—had the house built around the year 1500 for the purpose of collecting taxes from the farmers. The so-called tithe, i.e. one tenth of the annual harvest. The grain went to Gengenbach to the monastery mill with its adjoining monastery bakery; the grapes were pressed in the house into sacramental wine and distributed to the individual parishes and abbeys.

At that time, the house was a proper farm with cows, pigs, goats, ducks and chickens. In the entire house there was only one kitchen, a parlour and the abbot’s sleeping quarters. The maids and farmhands had the simplest of rooms under the roof or directly with the animals in the stable. All the guest rooms in our house were only created from the early 1960s onwards through conversion and extension work.

Under pressure from Napoleon Bonaparte, so-called secularisation also took place in the Ortenau region from 1803 onwards—i.e. the expropriation of monastery and church property. At that time, politically we still belonged to Austria. And when the house was then sold, it was hardly surprising that the purchase price was set in Theresienthaler. My ancestors paid 200 Theresienthaler for the house at that time. Since then, the house has been in family ownership—but through inheritance on the maternal side, the family name of the head of the household changed several times.

History of Romantik-Pension Vogt

In the 1960s, the transformation from a farm to a guesthouse began. The barn was demolished and a new extension with the first two guest rooms was built. Further construction phases created the large family room and another guest room.

The photo above shows our very first house guests around 1966. They came to us in the Black Forest from Eschwegen to recuperate. We are still in contact with them today. I have now been running the guesthouse as the second generation for more than 20 years.

Photo Galerie

Below are a few impressions from days gone by.
